“THE ARCTIC INSTEAD OF IBIZA”

At first glance, the gin clear waters of Cunningham Inlet may evoke visions of the Maldives but Alexander Stilcken is quick to dispel any notions of suntanning or snorkeling in his recent article in GQ Magazine’s German edition “The Arctic Instead of Ibiza”. Despite being situated along the ocean, Alex tells his readers to swap their beach chairs for down parkas in order to experience a five-star summer vacation at the end of the world. In an email, he writes “spending your time in the very remote Arctic and surrounded by nature is the rarest and best form possible when it comes to spending your summer holiday. Way better than lying in the sun at some crowded Spanish island.” A trip to Arctic Watch is for the adventurers among us that want to experience the raw and unadulterated beauty of the Arctic landscape. Alex certainly falls into that category. He later writes, “the Arctic, in general, is beyond comparison and my trip at Arctic Watch was a truly unique experience”.

Reflecting on the appeal of the Arctic, Alex notes that Somerset Island is approximately the same size as Sardinia, yet completely uninhabited. With only 24 guests per week and an uninhabited island to explore, Arctic Watch offers perhaps the rarest amenity of all, infinite space. Our lodge offers some of the most comfortable accommodations of the Canadian Arctic all the while, maintaining an intimate connection with the landscape.

From hiking along the open tundra, to rafting canyons or admiring ice formations along the moody Northwest Passage, each day was full of adventure. Alex simply soaked it all in. At 74 degrees North, the sun never sets during the summer months. It is never the encroaching night that dulls the lust for adventure, he writes. If anything, it is the primal need for sleep that eventually draws the day to a close.

Alex closes an email by writing “I tend to say “the trip of a lifetime” but since this would mean that I would not travel again to Somerset Island I guess I should probably say: it was by far the best and most special vacation ever.” Thank you, Alex, for the wonderful writeup and your genuine sense of adventure! We hope our paths cross again soon.
